    Giving Through Retirement Accounts

If you are 70.5 years of age or older, there are many reasons you may want to use funds from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement plan to support the Alzheimer's Association, but only one allows you to give now. A qualified charitable distribution (QCD), also called an IRA charitable rollover, allows your donation to make a difference right away and may offer immediate tax benefits.

Benefits of giving through retirement accounts

    • Avoid income tax. A QCD, also called an IRA charitable rollover, is excluded from your taxable income.
    • Reduce your tax burden. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the amount of tax you pay on Social Security benefits and Medicare premiums.
    • Reduce taxes for your heirs. IRAs left to individuals can be heavily taxed; giving from your IRA now can reduce future tax liability.
    • Satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD). If you are over the age of 72, your IRA gift to the Alzheimer's Association counts toward your RMD.
    • Give up to $111,000 per year. Use an IRA charitable rollover to meet your RMD requirements tax-free and make an impact today for the Alzheimer's Association.
    • Create a one-time only charitable gift annuity up to $55,000. Receive fixed income for life for you and/or a spouse and advance Alzheimer's care, research and support.
    • Put your gift to work now. Your gift starts helping immediately.

How giving through retirement accounts works

    • Name the Alzheimer's Association as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement plan.
    • Designate a percentage or specific amount to be distributed after your lifetime.
    • If you are 70.5 years of age or older, you can give up to $111,000 annually from your IRA directly to the Alzheimer's Association without having to pay income taxes on the gift.
    • Fund a one-time charitable gift annuity (CGA) of up to $55,000 with a QCD from your IRA if you're 70.5 years of age or older.
    • These gifts can reduce estate taxes and ensure your values live on through your support of Alzheimer's research, care and advocacy.

How to make a gift from your retirement account

If you're 70.5 years of age or older, you can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to the Alzheimer's Association.

    • Contact your IRA administrator. Tell your plan administrator you'd like to make a qualified charitable distribution to the Alzheimer's Association. They may have a simple form or online process to initiate the transfer.
    • Provide our details. Your administrator will need: Legal name: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc. EIN: 13-3039601. Mailing address: 225 N Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 Attn: Planned Giving. Phone: (312) 335-8700
    • Provide your details. IRA gifts often arrive without donor information. Please include your name and address with your check request. Including your information is the only way to receive an acknowledgement in a timely manner.
    • Notify us of your gift. Please let us know your gift is on the way so we can thank you properly and ensure it's used as you intend.
